1. Technical Field
The present disclosure relates generally to a fuel cell.
2. Description of Related Art
A fuel cell is a device that converts the chemical energy of a fuel directly into electricity through chemical reactions. Typically, fuel cells are used to produce electricity efficiently from hydrocarbon fuels such as hydrogen, methanol, and coal. A fuel cell has an anode and a cathode that are spaced apart by a polymer electrolyte membrane, and can efficiently produce electricity from a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, as shown in equation (1).CH2O+H2→CO2+6H++6e− (1)
In the chemical reaction, six electrons are transferred from the fuel to the cathode via six protons (H+) that are transferred through the polymer electrolyte membrane. The six protons that are transferred through the polymer electrolyte membrane are coupled with the electrons transferred to the cathode to produce water and heat.
